The Physical and Sports Development Program offered by the Sports and Physical Development Unit (SPDU) takes into account two core philosophies: the Warrior's Ethos and that “Every Cadet is an Athlete.”
Warrior's Ethos
This is the code of behavior or mindset that is taught to the cadet corps primarily through their Sports Development (SD) and Physical Development (PD) courses. It is further developed in activities like the CCAFP Intramurals, BBEAL, and other competitions or tournaments outside of PMA.
The warrior's way of life begins in his basics training. In the PMA Athletic Complex, this mindset is established in the combatives, gymnastics, and swimming classes. These are courses offered to the 4CL cadets where humility, discipline, and grit are developed.
Courage to try new things and action in the face of fear is next formed as the cadets take their martial arts electives in their next year. Whether they choose Arnis, Karate, Judo, or Taekwondo, they grow into the warrior's mindset as they learn about controlled aggression, intentional confidence, consistency, and self-mastery. For the next three years of their cadetship, the students progress further into their martial arts mastery, balancing stubbornness with intelligence, learning to embrace the suck, and acknowledging fear but not succumbing to it.
As they move up into their Cow and Immaculate years, the cadets will have their racket sports and team sports electives respectively. Now equipped with patience, resilience, discipline, and humility, the cadets have a chance to play in teams. Camaraderie and mutual responsibility are now honed as the cadets must face the challenges of becoming adept in racket and ball sports as a team. Iron sharpens iron; and our warrior cadets will improve, push, challenge, and support each other.
This warrior's ethosis also applied in the cadets' PD courses, especially when they must take their Physical Fitness Tests (PFTs), Physical Ability Tests (PAbTs), Functional Fitness Test (FFT), and Indoor Obstacle Course Test (IOCT).
Every Cadet is an Athlete
The military demands physical excellence, mental resilience, discipline, teamwork, and leadership— all of which are forged through athletic training.
Cadets prepare for real-world missions that require endurance, strength, coordination, and performance under stress. A leader whose body matches their responsibility leads effectively.
Through training on the mats, courts, track, and in the pool, cadets develop grit, emotional control, and resilience under pressure.
Discipline is a shared foundation between athletes and cadets. Both set goals, adhere to routines, and push beyond discomfort in pursuit of excellence.
A cadet who embodies athletic discipline sends a clear message: “I will not ask my troops to do anything I cannot do myself.” This earns confidence, respect, and trust as future leaders of the AFP.
